I wrote about "Nixonland" -- from Chuck Prophet's forthcoming album, "The Land That Time Forgot" -- on the previous page of this thread when Chuck performed it solo at McCabe's last November. This recording is stunning with James DePrato's guitar. Chuck sees his new single as a "kind of basement tapes power dirge mashed up with a gangster border ballad." I love the last frame: "In loving memory of Hunter S. Thompson." Although the album's release was postponed to August 21 in the hope that record stores will all be open again, Yep Roc Records will ship the CD's and red vinyl LP's for free in mid-May. I pre-ordered my copy here: yeproc.11spot.com/chuck-prophet-the-land-that-time-forgot-cd-and-first-edition-lp.html?mc_cid=22f91925bc&mc_eid=5813db6524

While we wait for Chuck Prophet's new album, he's given us a tremendous gift. "Temple Beautiful" is one of the very best albums recorded by anybody in the last decade, which means that it also ranks among the all time greats. Chuck performed the entire album in 2013 with his band, the Mission Express -- and a string octet -- in the city that inspired every song. The concert was filmed! Quoting from Chuck's March 20 newsletter: I bought a higher quality audio download of the show from Bandcamp for $13: chuckprophet.bandcamp.com/album/strings-in-the-temple-live-with-orchestra-at-the-great-american-music-hall

"The Land That Time Forgot" has been on constant rotation in my house and car since late May. I pre-ordered my CD in February, and despite the postponed release date to August 21, Chuck's label Yep Roc Records shipped mine only a couple of weeks past the original date.
My favorite song so far is "Willie and Nilli," as rendered in mp3 sound below in a beautiful official video with captioned lyrics. Says Chuck, "Sonically it's rain on a conga drum all the way. With an electric e-bow guitar by James DePrato weaving in and out. An e-bow straight out of Bowie’s 'Heroes'...It's a kind of seduction, a prayer even. It's the best and the worst of times in three verses. With the thumb on the scale leaning toward the best of times."
